Devo Series: 1 Thessalonians 5

Day People (1 Thessalonians 5:1-11)

For you are all children of light ... since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. (5:5a, 8)

Are you an early bird or a night owl? We all have preferences; some of us prefer to stay up late, while others love waking up early. For some, the darkness brings fear and seeing just a small glimmer of light brings a sense of releif and hope. This text from Paul reminds us of our true hope -- we can rest in the fact that we are children of light, the light of the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This truth makes us "fully aware" (v. 2), as Paul says, about the urgency of sharing the Gospel. As children of God, we are aware that our Lord can return at anytime, as a "thief in the night" (v. 2). Because of this, the call to "go therefore and make disciples of all nations" (Matt 28:19) cannot just be a bumper sticker quote. The church is called to go -- and to go with urgency.

The good news we have is so good we cannot keep it to ourselves. As we go, Paul's text reminds us that we don't go alone, unprotected. We are to "put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation" (v. 8). In our daily interactions with others, we have love to share. In the temptations we face, we are protected by our faith. And we need not fear, because the hope of our salvation is our helmet.

So, whether your sleep preference defines you as an early bird or night owl, through the gift of faith in Jesus that was received in our baptism, we are all day people - children of God and children of the light! Let us then be bold in sharing the light of Jesus Christ with others.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, You have named us as Your own children in our baptism so that we are now children of light. Give us the strength, courage, and words to share the truth of Your Gospel with those You have set before us in our homes, communities, and vocations. Lead us, guide us, and protect us as we live for You. In Your Son's name we pray. Amen.

Gente del Día (1 Tesalonicenses 5:1-11)

Sino que todos ustedes son hijos de la luz e hijos del día ... los que somos del día, debemos ser sobrios, ya que nos hemos revestido de la coraza de la fe y del amor, y tenemos como casco la esperanza de la salvación. (5:5a, 8)

¿Prefieres despertar temprano or dormir tarde? Todos tenemos preferencia. Para algunos, la oscuridad trae miedo y a ver solo un pequeño rayo de luz trae una sensación de alivio y esperanzo. Este texto de Pablo nos recuerda nuestra verdadera esperanza: podemos descansar en el hecho que somos hijos de luz, la luz de la verdad del Evangelio de Jesucristo. Esta verdad nos hace "saber perfectamente" (v. 2) de la urgencia de compartir el Evangelio. Como hijos de Dios, somos conscientes de que nuestro Señor puede regresar en cualquier momento, como un "ladrón en la noche" (v. 2). Debido a esto, el llamdo o "Id, pues, y haced discípulos a todas las naciones" (Mateo 28:19) no puede ser simplemente una frase común o cotidiana. La iglesia está llamada a ir e ir con urgencia.

Las buenas noticias qut tenemos son tan buenas que no podemos guardarlas para nosotros mismos. A medida que avanzamos, el texto de Pablo nos recuerda que no vamos solos, sin protección, sino que debemos estar "revestido de la coraza de la fe y del amor, y tenemos como casco la esperanza de la salvación (v. 8). En nuestras interacciones diarias con los demás, tenemos amor para compartir. En las tentaciones que enfrentamos, estamos protegidos por nuestra fe. Y no debemos temer, porque la esperanza de nuestra salvación es nuestro casco. 

Entonces, ya sea que nuestras preferencias de sueño nos pongan en cualquiera de las categorías, a través del don de fe in Jesús que recibimos en nuestro bautismo, todos somos gente del día, ¡hijos de Dios e hijos de la luz! Seamos audaces al compartir la luz de Jesucristo con los demás. 

Oración:

Padre celestial, tú nos has nombrado como tus propios hijos en nuestro bautism para que ahora seamos hijos de luz. Danos la fuerza, el valor, y las palabras para compartir la verdad de tu evangelio con aquellos que has puesto delante de nosotros en nuestros hogares, comunidades y vocaciones. Guíanos y protégenos mientras vivimos para Ti. En el nombre de tu hijo, Amén.
